It really won't "mess up" your eyes. No damage will occur. It has been known to produce epileptic seizures though with those who have epilepsy.

As I understand it, cats, like humans, can have epileptic fits. So strobing lights may not be good for them. Also strobes cause temporary semi-blindness and after images. A cat will look directly at the strobe light whereas we humans know better than to do that. (try looking directly at the strobe light yourself).

No it doesn't lead to astigmatism. Strobe lights might lead to some temporary blindess (sort of like staring at the sun) -- eye fatigue, and depending on the 'brightness' of the strobes shouldn't be stared at for any period. However just being in their presence at a concert or night club isn't going to do any damage to your vision.

The strobe effect does have a definite effect on our coordination and sort of 'tricks the senses' -- where you do feel 'odd' when you have it on in the dark and then turn the lights back on. You get an on/off visual input in quick succession.
